Pakistan’s Nuclear Arsenal Still a Security Concern

Improving relations between the U.S. and Pakistan contributed to Pentagon’s decision to release nearly $700 million in reimbursements held up by a series of disputes over the past two years, the New York Times reports. The reimbursements cover some of costs of Pakistan’s military support for counterinsurgency efforts in Afghanistan.

Despite some progress on U.S.-Pakistan cooperation, Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal remains a serious security challenge, the Times notes. Pakistan’s move to develop tactical nuclear warheads – smaller and more portable than strategic weapons – is particularly concerning.
