American Competitiveness and National Security

November 28, 8:30 – 9:30 a.m.

 Gov. Christine Todd Whitman will discuss challenges to U.S. competitiveness and what we as a nation can do about it.

Governor Whitman will be joined by business leader Raj Fernando, who will give the private sector view on the need to strengthen our economy and competitiveness.
 

U.S. rankings in global competitiveness surveys are falling.  The World Economic Forum ranks the U.S. 7^th out of 144 for 2012-2013 for competitiveness, down from 4^th in the previous year.  Improving our country’s competitiveness is an urgent national security issue that requires a consensus among U.S. political and business leaders.  This discussion must include factors beyond military might in order to understand, and improve, America’s position globally.

Join us for a fact-based discussion about America’s competitiveness and how policy and business decisions made presently may influence American competitiveness well into the 21^st Century.

This discussion will be on the record.

About the speakers:

Governor Christine Todd Whitman is the President of The Whitman Strategy Group (WSG), a consulting firm that specializes in energy and environmental issues.  She is also co-chair of the Republican Leadership Council (RLC), which she founded with Senator John Danforth.

Governor Whitman served in the cabinet of President George W. Bush as Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency from January of 2001 until June of 2003. She was the 50th Governor of the State of New Jersey, serving as its first woman governor from 1994 until 2001.

Raj Fernando is CEO and founder of Chopper Trading, a technology based trading firm headquartered in Chicago.  Mr. Fernando is a specialist in risk management, technological innovation, and cyber security.  Prior to founding Chopper Trading, Mr. Fernando held a variety of positions at both the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and Chicago Board of Trade both of which he is a member.  He is also active in the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.  Mr. Fernando holds a bachelors degree in economics and history from Beloit College, Wisconsin.

August Cole is a writer and analyst specializing in national security issues. He is an Adjunct Fellow at the American Security Project, a non-partisan think tank, where he focuses on defense industry issues. August is also a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies.  From 2007 to 2010, August reported on the defense industry for the Wall Street Journal. From 1998 to 2006, he worked as an editor and a reporter for MarketWatch.com, a financial news Web site. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a Mid-Career Master in Public Administration degree from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
