Secretary of State John Kerry and Secretary of Defense Ash Carter wrote in USA Today in support of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and urged the House of Representatives to join the Senate in authorizing President Obama to continue negotiations on this important trade agreement.

“As the secretaries of State and Defense, we never forget that our strength abroad ultimately rests on the foundation of our vibrant, unmatched and growing domestic economy. By lowering trade barriers among countries that make up nearly 40% of the global economy, TPP would better connect the United States with economies along the Pacific Rim — from Canada to Japan, and Peru to Australia”

Secretaries Kerry and Carter join many former US officials in voicing support for TPP and its Europe-focused counterpart, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. Free trade is an important way to build and maintain strategic relationships, while providing the American economy broader access to the world market.
