BBC: Would-be Suicide Bombers Jailed For Life

Today Ibrahim Savant, Afafat Waheed Khan, and Waheed Zaman, all of whom were charged with trying to detonate liquid explosives on several transatlantic flights out of London in 2006, were sentenced to life in prison.

The sentencing judge acknowledged that the three men, whom the plot’s mastermind Abdulla Ahmed Ali recruited to blow themselves up while aboard passenger jets, were only “footsoldiers.” In handing down the sentence, however, the Judge highlighted the fact that the men, whose lawyers tried to portray them as having been corrupted by other conspirators, were nonetheless prepared to kill and maim large numbers of innocent civilians.

The three men had previously been acquitted of targeting civilian aviation, but after a retrial were found guilty of plotting mass murder. Chief plotter Abdulla Ali and five other men involved in the plot are already serving life sentences.
