ASP Fellow Joshua Foust reflects on the war in Afghanistan and distills five lessons that the US should take away from the experience: the dangers of magical thinking, the importance of understanding the environment, the political nature of war, the consequences of failing to plan, and that time is the real measure of success.

Only by starting to think about Afghanistan in this way – with decades as the measurement of time instead of years or months – can we even hope to make any realistic plans for the future.
