The most recent issue of the Ted Stevens Center’s Journal of Arctic and Climate Studies features an article on US Arctic strategy by ASP’s Director, Climate Security Programs, Jessica Olcott Yllemo, and former ASP employee Tucker Hamilton. With temperatures rising in the Arctic more quickly than the rest of the world, the US must recognize the region’s importance in multiple areas, such as border security, national defense, and human safety. The point is further emphasized by addressing how China and Russia have each expressed the importance of the region to their interests. Covering some of both national defense and national security strategies for the area, as well as an overview of recent federal actions, click to the link above to read more about how US federal departments and agencies plan to maintain current peace and be prepared to address threats in the face of the region’s growing strategic importance because of rising temperatures.
