The Gulf of Mexico is an ecologically and economically productive marine environment that suffers from extensive illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and exploitation. Often, IUU fishing operations are conducted by agents of drug cartels, and Chinese customers make use of these criminal channels to secure seafoods that are otherwise inaccessible on legitimate markets.
