Please join us on Tuesday, July 12 for a conversation on President Joseph R. Biden’s upcoming trip to the Middle East with Linda Robinson, Director of the Center for Middle East Public Policy and Senior International Defense Researcher at RAND, and Steven A. Cook, Senior Fellow for Middle East and Africa Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, ASP adjunct senior fellow Giorgio Cafiero will preside. Panelists will discuss the President’s visit to Israel, the West Bank and Saudi Arabia and U.S. strategic priorities in the region.
About the speakers:
Linda Robinson is director of the Center for Middle East Public Policy and a senior policy researcher at the RAND Corporation. She is also a noted book author, frequent public speaker, and a prize-winning former foreign correspondent with 30 years of experience in international affairs and national security. Before joining RAND in 2013, Robinson was a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, the Wilson Center, the International Institute for Strategic Studies, the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, and the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University. She was a foreign correspondent for U.S. News and World Report and senior editor of Foreign Affairs magazine. Robinson served on the boards of the National Defense University and the Army War College. For her contributions as chair of the latter board, she received the Army’s Outstanding Civilian Service award.
Steven A. Cook is Eni Enrico Mattei senior fellow for Middle East and Africa studies and director of the International Affairs Fellowship for Tenured International Relations Scholars at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). He is an expert on Arab and Turkish politics as well as U.S.-Middle East policy. Cook is the author of False Dawn: Protest, Democracy, and Violence in the New Middle East; The Struggle for Egypt: From Nasser to Tahrir Square, which won the 2012 gold medal from the Washington Institute for Near East Policy; and Ruling but Not Governing: The Military and Political Development in Egypt, Algeria, and Turkey. Oxford University Press is publishing his next book, The End of Ambition: America’s Past, Present, and Future in the Middle East in 2022.
Giorgio Cafiero, an ASP adjunct fellow, is the CEO and founder of Gulf State Analytics, a geopolitical risk consultancy based in Washington, DC. His research interests include geopolitical and security trends in the Arabian Peninsula and the broader Middle East. Mr. Cafiero is a regular contributor to several publications including Al Monitor, The National Interest, and LobeLog. From 2014-2015, he was an analyst at Kroll, an investigative due diligence consultancy. He received an M.A. in International Relations from the University of San Diego.
