Climate Change and US-China Relations
Check out this posting in the Foreign Policy Association’s “Climate Change” blog. As we have said before (here and here), climate change policy is intertwined with many aspects of America’s foreign policy and our relationship with China is no exception. The State Department’s newly appointed envoy on climate change, Todd Stern, will join Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in a trip to meet with leaders from across Asia, notably China.
While climate change is an important issue in the new Administration’s relationship with China, it is critial that we establish a solid collaberation rather than be drawn into direct competition. Last November, American Security Project Adjunct Fellow James Blaker, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense and Senior Advisor to the Vice Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff released a report which detailed the steps necessary for positive US-China relations.
