
Briefing Note – Southeast Pacific Ocean
The Southeast Pacific Ocean is home to incomparable marine environments like the Humboldt Current System, the Galapagos, and the Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary. It also is home to approximately 20% of worldwide fish catch and is ripe for IUU fishing abuses. The notorious 2020 challenges with a 300 ship Chinese distant water fleet/dark fleet highlighted the need for more international collaboration and transparency in the region.
