On September 29, Yale Climate Connections published an interview with Vice Admiral Lee Gunn, USN (ret.). During the interview, VADM Gunn discussed the military’s role in providing assistance during disasters and humanitarian crises, and how that role is increasing as extreme weather events become more frequent in a warming world.

Weather disasters require the emergency response and aid of the military, but they are far from the only threat. Slow-moving impacts, such as sea level rise and ocean acidification also stress communities reliant on fishing and agriculture.

“These stresses are going to lead far more often to humanitarian disasters,” VADM Gunn cites, explaining that this could become a serious concern for the U.S. Military.
