ASP Fellow Joshua Foust in Foreign Policy
ASP Fellow Joshua Foust responds in a letter to the argument that al-Qaeda is stronger and more capable now than it has ever been. In his letter, Foust observes that recent data indicate a decrease in terrorist incidents globally and that al-Qaeda affiliates have lost ground in places like Somalia.
Reality just doesn’t bear out such an overly gloomy assessment. Examining the data empirically, which the American Security Project has done annually since 2006, shows a mixed bag of successes and setbacks in the struggle against terrorism. There is no factual basis on which to claim that al Qaeda is resurgent.
