Washington, D.C., September 18, 2021 – The American Security Project announces that Patrick C. Costello has been named the organization’s new Chief Executive Officer, effective today.

Costello is a leading expert in U.S. foreign policy, trade policy, business diplomacy and the domestic politics of American foreign policy. Costello spent over a decade at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) in Washington where he held a number of senior roles and directed CFR’s interactions with Washington policymakers and the diplomatic community. Costello earned bachelor’s degrees from the University of Massachusetts, a post-graduate certificate from Exeter College, University of Oxford, a master’s degree from King’s College London, and has done graduate study at the National Defense University and the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford.

At ASP, Costello will lead a staff of research and policy experts, providing day-to-day management of organizational strategy and increasing ASP’s presence to external stakeholders and more.

Upon his appointment, ASP Chairperson Governor Christine Whitman said, “We are delighted to have Patrick lead the organization into a new era. His knowledge, experience, and reputation place him in a prime position to carry ASP’s message forward during a time when bipartisan agreement on issues of national security is becoming scarce.”

ASP President Brigadier General Stephen Cheney, USMC (Ret.) also remarked that, “Patrick’s extensive breadth of experience at the Council of Foreign Relations will continue to raise ASP’s profile and expand its research. I am looking forward to a new chapter in ASP’s long history as he works to grow our support in and out of the Beltway. I am thrilled to see Patrick at the helm during this exciting time.”

Since 2005, ASP has been at the forefront of national security research and analysis. ASP works to forge a bipartisan consensus on a national security strategy that will restore America’s leadership across the globe.
