On November 14, ASP Research Analyst Katherine Yusko shared insights about the current state of U.S.-China electric vehicle (EV) competition on DW’s “The Dip” podcast. Yusko emphasized the expanding gap between the American and Chinese EV industries, noting that:

“China is really delivering in terms of price and quality. It’s not only delivering the highest volume of vehicles, it’s also producing vehicles that are more technologically advanced than many of its competitors’. While China is all in on EVs, we’re seeing U.S. companies pull back on their electrification goals.”

Yusko also emphasized the massive price gap between American and Chinese EVs as a result of variation in government support and consumer demand. She suggested that although Americans have accepted steep tariffs locking Chinese vehicles out of the market for now, this may not always be the case as China’s EV enterprise expands its global foothold:

“Americans are seeing countries all over the world getting vehicles for a fraction of the price of the ones that are available in the United States…America is going to have to come to a reckoning at some point with how it’s excluded Chinese vehicles from its market.”
