Chairperson of ASP’s Board of Directors Christine Todd Whitman speaks to CNN regarding the “grave danger” of EPA Changes
On October 12th, 2017, Chairperson of the American Security Project’s Board of Directors and former Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, Governor Christine Todd Whitman, spoke to CNN International regarding President Trump’s moves to end the EPA’s Clean Power Plan.
In the interview, Governor Whitman clarified that the repeal of the rule is not as simple as the administration has stated. Among other requirements, she explained that the EPA will not only need to propose a new rule, but will need to defend and justify their decision in the face of previous scientific evidence and answer all questions and comments regarding the decision throughout the process- which will most likely be long. She also went on to explain that the bigger concern is ways in which the EPA could slow down the implementation and enforcement of existing regulations, something that the administration has already engaged in and that the country cannot afford to deal with.
“There are 200,000 deaths in the United States every year from dirty, airborne related causes,” Governor Whitman stated. With those deaths in mind, as well as the costly damage being done to the nation as a result of extreme weather tied to climate change, she further stated that “all of these things are what EPA is designed to try and prevent, and what are being rolled back and putting us in grave danger.”
