On Tuesday, April 18, an op-ed authored by ASP’s CEO BGen. Stephen Cheney‘s titled, “Upholding the BLM Methane rule is a no-brainer for our energy security and a stronger America” was featured in The Hill.

Over the past decade, the United States has had a robust energy portfolio comprised of renewables and natural gasses. This diversification in energy resources has been an important aspect of the country’s national security.

In this recent article, BGen. Cheney discusses the importance of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Rule on Methane and Waste Prevention which seeks to curb the waste of methane from venting, flaring, and leaking across our public lands. Recently, however, the House passed the Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution that would block the BLM methane rule and also prevent any similar rule from being enacted.

BGen. Cheney stresses that there are significant costs in the waste of natural gas. When methane emissions are not limited, taxpayers lose tens of millions of dollars in royalty revenue. In addition, he notes that,

Methane, the primary component of natural gas, is 80 times more powerful that carbon dioxide as a climate change pollutant. Wasting energy and threatening our climate when there are alternatives makes no sense.

As the Senate is scheduled to vote on the Congressional Review Act (CRA), Senators must defend America’s energy resources and oppose the resolution. BGen. Cheney reminds us how critical the BLM Rule is for our national security and the U.S. role in energy efficiency.
