Is climate change a threat to U.S. national security?  The former Inspector General of the U.S. Navy, who was responsible for readiness says it could be.   Vice Admiral Gunn has testified before a U.S. Senate committee that “climate change will lead to agricultural and water shortages, migration of climate refugees, and weakened states that will breed extremism, as well as the economic and military implications of these changes if no action is taken.”

Vice Admiral Gunn has also been an outspoken critic of the use of torture and secret prisons in interrogating terrorism suspects.

Vice Admiral Gunn is currently President of the Institute for Public Research at CNA in Alexandria, Virginia. He also serves as President of the American Security Project, a bi-partisan, non-profit enterprise dedicated to engaging the American people in a broader and deeper conversation about the complex nature of national security policy. Before taking on these roles, Vice Admiral Gunn served in the United States Navy for 35 years. He commanded a Frigate, a Destroyer Squadron, and the Third Fleet Amphibious Force. He was a line officer, and for the last three years of his Navy career, and was the Inspector General of the Department of the Navy.

Vice Admiral Gunn will discuss his views on Thursday’s Radio Smart Talk.
