The U.S. has key security and geopolitical interests that make access to the Persian Gulf region a critical national security priority. Despite calls for a total withdrawal of U.S. military forces from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) members, it is in Washington’s interest to maintain a military presence, even if a lighter one, embedded within the security architecture of the Gulf. The U.S. should continue to engage GCC states, which remain critical allies in meeting the shifting security challenges in the Middle East.
