Rivkin is the Bruce V. Rauner Professor and chair of the Strategy Unit at Harvard Business School. His research\, course development\, and teaching efforts examine the interactions across functional and product boundaries within a firm – that is\, the connections that link marketing\, production\, logistics\, finance\, human resource management\, and other parts of a firm. His work analyzes\, first\, how such interactions constrain managerial behavior and\, second\, how managers use cognitive devices and organizational design to cope with decisions whose ramifications span boundaries. \nRivkin’s scholarly work has appeared in journals such as Management Science\, Organization Science\, the Strategic Management Journal\, the Academy of Management Journal\, Administrative Science Quarterly\, and Research Policy. Much of this work uses simulations of complex adaptive systems to examine the theoretical implications of cross-cutting interactions. His empirical work on the topic employs a mix of large-scale statistical studies\, field research\, and case studies. \nRivkin also co-chairs HBS’s project on the competitiveness of the United States.  In that role\, he has worked with a faculty team to explore steps that leaders–especially business leaders–can take to improve the ability of firms in the U.S. to win in the global marketplace and support American living standards. His work in this domain focuses on (a) how managers choose to locate business activities in the United States or elsewhere and (b) how business leaders can best work with educators to improve America’s schools. \n  \nDan Cardinali \nDan Cardinali is president of Communities In Schools\, Inc.\, the nation’s largest dropout prevention organization\, with operations in 27 states and the District of Columbia. Established in 1977\, Communities In Schools serves more than 1.25 million of America’s most disenfranchised students each year.  Under Cardinali’s leadership\, the organization has developed and embraced an evidence-based model of integrated student service provision and has launched a national growth strategy to increase the organization’s impact on improving public education.  Cardinali is a 2007 Annie E. Casey Children and Families Fellow.  He also currently serves as a trustee for America’s Promise\, and as chairman of the board of directors of Peace First.  Cardinali is a board member of The Harwood Institute of Public Innovation and Child Trends.  In May 2011 Dan Cardinali was appointed by President Barack Obama to the Presidential Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics. \nTrained as a community organizer in Guadalajara\, Mexico\, Cardinali served on a team organizing a “squatter” community of 120\,000 to secure land rights\, running water and public education.  He returned to Washington\, D.C.\, to receive a one-year research fellowship at the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University.  Cardinali holds a bachelor’s degree in international relations from Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and a master’s degree in philosophy from Fordham University. \nResources \nCommunities In Schools \nU.S. Competitiveness \nPK-12 Education \n  \nABOUT THE AMERICAN SECURITY PROJECT \n  \nThe American Security Project is a non-profit\, non-partisan public policy and research organization dedicated to fostering knowledge and understanding of a range of national security issues\, promoting debate about the appropriate use of American power\, and cultivating strategic responses to 21st century challenges. SUMMARY:EVENT INVITE: Building a Better Corporate Tax Regime & Strengthening our Economic Security – A conversation with Robert Pozen
DESCRIPTION:The American Security Project invites you to a breakfast event:\n  \n\n  \nBuilding a Better Corporate Tax Regime & Strengthening our Economic Security\n  \nA conversation with Robert Pozen\n  \nThe proposed acquisitions by Pfizer\, Omnicom and GE have focused government attention on the counter productive system we now have for taxing foreign profits of US corporations. \n  \nBob Pozen will explain the tax strategies being pursued by these US companies and evaluate possible legislative reforms to the current US tax system for foreign profits. \n \nMay 13th\, 8:30-9:30 A.M.\n  \n  \nWith a new chairman in the US Senate Finance Committee\, the stubborn issue of tax reform is coming back to the forefront.  In addition to cuts in the US corporate tax rate\, many want to encourage repatriation of the $2 trillion in foreign profits of US multinationals “locked out” because of US tax rules.  However\, the bipartisan popularity of existing tax preferences and widespread concerns over hurting American competitiveness make corporate tax reform a formidable challenge for Congress. \nJoin ASP Tuesday\, May 13th as we host Bob Pozen for an informative discussion about corporate tax reform\, as well as the many fiscal and political obstacles facing it.  Mr. Pozen will present his unique strategy for a new corporate tax regime that could end up benefiting governments and US corporations alike.  Much of the discussion will revolve around Bob Pozen’s February article in The Wall Street Journal\, “A Better Path to Corporate Tax Reform.” \n \n  \nThe event will take place at: \n  \nThe American Security Project \n  \n1100 New York Ave\, NW Washington DC \n  \nSeventh Floor\, West Tower \n  \nThe event will begin promptly at 8:30AM. \n  \nBreakfast light refreshments will be served at 8:00- 830am.  We hope to see you there! \n\nRobert C. Pozen is an accomplished Senior Lecturer at the Harvard Business School and Senior Research Fellow at the Brookings Institution.  He has served as chairman for MFS Investment Management® and the SEC’s advisory committee on improving financial reporting\, while also serving as Secretary of Economic Affairs for Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney in 2003.  Mr. Pozen has been widely published in The Wall Street Journal\, The Washington Post\, The New York Times\, and Financial Times. \n  \nABOUT THE AMERICAN SECURITY PROJECT \nThe American Security Project is a non-profit\, non-partisan public policy and research organization dedicated to fostering knowledge and understanding of a range of national security issues\, promoting debate about the appropriate use of American power\, and cultivating strategic responses to 21st century challenges.
