Emily Gershon is a master’s candidate in the Security Studies Program at Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, concentrating in terrorism and sub-state violence. Emily is passionate about examining the nexus between security and development with a focus on government transparency and accountability in sub-Saharan Africa, and has conducted research on the impacts of military engagements on long term stability and the responsibilities that accompany humanitarian and military interventions.

Emily currently serves as the Chief Clerk of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Ethics where she has helped to advance the Committee’s efforts to ensure congressional transparency and accountability in order to maintain public trust for those in office. In this role, Emily served as the primary drafter of the United States legislative branch’s submission to Group of States Against Corruption’s (GRECO) fourth evaluation round illustrating efforts to increase transparency and combat corruption. Previously, Emily worked in the non-profit sector in Gondar, Ethiopia, developing both programming for a youth leadership development program and an adaptive curriculum for blind and developmentally challenged students. Prior to her time in Ethiopia, Emily worked at an employment and labor law firm in Washington, DC and with the Office of the Public Defender in Maryland.

Emily holds a graduate certificate in Terrorism Analysis from the Center for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism at the University of Maryland. She graduated magna cum laude from St. Mary’s College of Maryland with a B.A. in International Public Policy and Political Science and a minor in Economics where she was the recipient of the 2012 Division Award for Scholarly Excellence in Political Science.
