Energy and Security

The close relationship between global energy needs and security is understood by most people: everybody needs more oil to fuel or sustain economic growth. It is true in the industrialized world, where petroleum is used in everything from transportation to the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and plastics. It is also true in the developing world where growth over the next 20 years is expected to be considerable. Asia as a whole will account for 80% of increased global demand for petroleum over that period.

There has been considerable—yet generally fruitless—debate over the actions necessary to improve America’s energy security, to diminish the risk of future energy-related crises, and engender innovation. Some argue that a shift towards a hydrogen economy is critical to solving America’s energy and environmental challenges. Others believe the United States should tap new oil fields on American soil. Still others favor new “clean coal” technologies.

ASP will work through competing claims to provide an accurate analysis of the challenge of achieving American energy security. Through analysis, reports, and events, it will analyze global energy needs, their impact on American strategy and defense planning, and practical steps for greater security that may also spur a new generation of innovation and economic development in the United States.
