Fusion Power and U.S. National Security

The American Security Project believes that fusion has the potential to supply our economy with a nearly inexhaustible supply of energy. Fusion energy is clean, safe, secure and abundant.

Below is a collection of our work on fusion. These reports, fact sheets, and perspective papers provide insight into fusion energy, the obstacles it faces, and next steps to commercialization.

Energy presents national security dilemmas for the United States, from climate change, to price volatility, to geopolitical tensions, to American competitiveness.

Developing fusion energy can help address all of these concerns. However, a bipartisan effort is needed to make fusion energy a reality. ASP’s work on fusion energy provides clear and objective analysis on fusion to inform policymakers and the public.

  1. I take an exception to the sentence in the opening paragraph — “Fusion energy is clean, safe, secure and abundant”, specifically the word abundant.

I am a big proponent of exploring sustained energy release by fusion processes. However, the word abundant is a misnomer in this case. For the ordinary citizen, abundance means the physical availably of a tangible material using available or well-mastered transformation processes. I also think the word abundant is suitable when the transformation process does not require mass injection of external energy as is the current state of fusion reactions.
