On Tuesday, CEO of ASP, BGen. Stephen Cheney was quoted on the recent “Energy Independence” Executive Order and Defense Secretary Mattis’ position on climate security in E&E News article, “Mattis might not bend to Trump’s skepticism on climate.”

Gen. Cheney discussed the component of the Executive Order that rolls back federal regulations which mandated climate change be considered as a national security issue.

“Our fear is that the way it’s phrased, other agencies are just free to ignore it,” said Gen. Cheney.

He added that, “Whereas in the past they were told specifically that this was a threat you must consider, that’s been taken off the table.”

However, Gen. Cheney went on to say that he does expect Secretary Mattis to incorporate climate change into his department’s national security strategy.

“I do think there’s a lot of respect for him, and I do think he’s very personally committed,” Cheney said.
